Chapter Twenty-One
My detour past the psychiatric hospital took longer than expected. Now I’m stuck in rush-hour traffic, and I’ll be lucky if I make it to my appointment on time. Better call ahead to let them know. The phone rings through the car audio system.
A girly voice answers, “Manscapers. You’re speaking with Jess.”
“Hi, Jess,” I say, unsure where to direct my voice. I’ve had this car for over a year, and still can’t figure out where the microphone is hidden. “It’s Dr. Chambers.”
“Oh hi, Dr. Chambers. How are you today?” Her voice is so saccharine sweet. I bet she’s faking a smile while she talks too. When did I get this cynical?
“I’m fine thanks, Jess. I just called to let you know that I’m running late today.”
“Dr. Chambers, you know we can only hold appointments for fifteen minutes.”
I bite my tongue. “That’s fine. Will you let Melody know that I’ll be fifteen minutes late?” Melody is the young lady who usually does my grooming. I’ve been to see her every six weeks for the past five years and I don’t trust anyone else with my junk.
“Um … your appointment is scheduled with Sally today.”
“There must be a mistake.” Now I’m starting to get irritated.
“Let me check.” Her voice drifts away, and I can hear the muffled sounds of her speaking to someone in the background. “No, it says here that you specifically requested Sally.”
I change lanes, because this one is going nowhere. The guy in the car behind me flips me the bird.
“She’s very good,” says Jess. Her insistence pisses me off even more.
I consider whether I should enter into a heated debate with Jess, but it’s just not worth the effort, and I’ll never get another appointment anywhere else in town at this late notice.
“See you in ten.”
I hang up the call before she can reply. I’m not going to let this spoil my evening.
When I arrive at the Manscapers reception, I’m greeted by a blonde bimbo with big boobs and fake blue eyes. This must be Jess. Why couldn’t they use young, vapid, muscly studs like the other places in town? I feel guilty for being here and for buying into the culture of outward appearance being so important. When did I become this vain? And why is my anxiety about this date tonight turning me into a complete bitch? Take it easy. Just relax.
“Todd Chambers, here for an appointment with Mel … uh … Sally.”
Jess looks up the appointment on the computer. “Oh yes. Dr. Chambers. You’re a few minutes late. Has it been a busy day?” Does she not recall speaking to me on the phone a few minutes earlier?
“It has,” I say.
Jess gives me an understanding nod and says, “Please take a seat and Sally will be through shortly.”
I go to sit down, but my conscience gets the better of me and forces me to turn around. “Jess?”
“Yes, Dr. Chambers.”
“I’m sorry for being so curt and rude to you.”
“That’s okay, Dr. Chambers, you should see me when I’m about to have a Brazilian.
